  • there is deflection and vibration of the substrate, especially with suspended slabs.
  • there are changes in the plane of the substrate
  • there is seismic activity
  • when there is continued curing of the concrete substrate which can put the tile in compression
  • when you need to install the tiles in a location of weight-bearing columns.

The Expansion Joints Material

As you can imagine, expansion joints need to be made with a different material so they that easily contract and expand when necessary. In what concerns floor applications, polysulfide, neoprene, and urethane tend to be the materials that are used more often. In cases where traffic isn’t a concern, the commercial tile contractor may opt to use silicone as well.
